Dark Circles Under the Eyes: What Actually Causes Them
Dark circles have at least four different causes, and each one responds to something different. How to tell which type you have before buying another eye cream.
One name, several different problems
Dark circles are a description, not a diagnosis. The darkness can be pigment in the skin, blood vessels showing through thin skin, a shadow cast by the structure of the eye area, or puffiness making the shadow deeper. Those four causes look similar in a mirror and respond to almost entirely different things.
That is why eye creams disappoint so reliably. A product aimed at pigment does nothing for a structural shadow, and no cream rebuilds the anatomy that casts one. Identifying your type first is the difference between a targeted routine and an expensive annual donation to the eye cream industry.
Simple tests to sort out your type
Gently stretch the skin under the eye. If the darkness spreads and lightens, vessels showing through thin skin are a major part of it. If the color stays put, pigment is more likely. Then look straight ahead in flat, front lighting versus overhead lighting: circles that largely vanish in flat light are mostly shadow, and shadows follow structure and puffiness, not skin color.
Brown tones suggest pigment, which is more common in deeper skin tones and after sun exposure and rubbing. Blue, purple, or pink tones suggest the vascular type. Many people have a mixture, with pigment over a structural shadow, which is why partial improvements are the realistic goal for most routines.
What helps each cause, honestly
Pigment based circles respond slowly to the usual brightening routine: gentle vitamin C or niacinamide, patience measured in months, and rigorous sun protection including sunglasses, since UV deepens under eye pigment exactly as it does everywhere else. Rubbing the eyes, from allergies or habit, is a pigment driver worth eliminating first because it is free.
Vascular circles improve modestly with sleep, allergy control, and cold compresses that constrict vessels temporarily. Structural shadows respond mainly to how light hits them, plus makeup technique, and in office options for volume loss where appropriate. Anyone promising that a cream will refill a hollow is describing a procedure and selling a jar.
The unglamorous multipliers
Sleep deprivation does not create most dark circles, but it reliably worsens every type: skin looks paler, so vessels show more, fluid balance shifts, and puffiness deepens shadows. Allergies are the other great multiplier, driving rubbing, congestion, and fluid retention around the eyes at the same time.
Treat those two first for a month before judging any product. A meaningful share of people discover their circles were mostly an allergy and sleep story wearing a skincare costume, and the remaining darkness, the true baseline, is smaller and easier to live with or treat precisely.

Frequently asked questions
Can eye cream actually fix dark circles?
Only the pigment type, partially and slowly, and only with consistent use plus sun protection. Vascular and structural circles have causes a cream cannot reach. Matching the product to your type is what separates a fair trial from a predictable disappointment.
Are dark circles caused by lack of sleep?
Lack of sleep worsens them by making skin paler and puffiness more pronounced, but the underlying causes are pigment, thin skin over vessels, and bone structure. Well rested people with those features still have circles, which is why sleep alone rarely clears them.
Why are my dark circles worse in the morning?
Fluid collects around the eyes overnight when you lie flat, increasing puffiness and the shadow it casts. Elevating the head slightly, a cold compress in the morning, and treating allergies all reduce the morning peak for the puffiness driven component.
When should dark circles be checked medically?
A new, one sided, or rapidly changing darkness, swelling that does not settle, or circles arriving with other symptoms deserve a medical look. Ordinary symmetrical circles that have been present for years are a cosmetic concern, not a warning sign.
