The dark dots on your nose are probably not blackheads. How to tell the two apart and why the treatments differ.

## Two different structures that look alike

A blackhead is a clogged pore: a plug of oil and dead skin whose surface oxidizes and turns dark. It sits slightly raised, feels like a small bump, and can be extracted as a solid plug. Blackheads are a form of acne and respond to acne focused care.

Sebaceous filaments are normal pore structures. They line the pore to help oil flow to the surface, and their tips can look grey, yellow, or dark. They sit flat, feel smooth, and are most visible on the nose and chin where pores are larger. They are not a flaw to cure.

## The squeeze test and its limits

When a blackhead is expressed, a firm plug comes out and the pore looks empty for a while. When a sebaceous filament is squeezed, a thin, waxy thread emerges and the pore refills within days, because the structure is permanent anatomy, not a blockage that can be removed once.

Frequent squeezing of filaments irritates the surrounding skin, can enlarge the look of pores over time, and risks broken capillaries on the nose. If the dots refill in a few days every single time, you are looking at filaments, and the goal shifts from removal to appearance management.

## Managing filaments without a war on your nose

Oil based cleansing helps loosen the oxidized tip of filaments so they look lighter. Salicylic acid, used a few times a week, dissolves oil inside the pore lining and keeps both filaments and true blackheads less visible. Clay masks before events give a temporary tightening effect that many people find enough.

Pore strips remove filament tips dramatically and satisfyingly, and then the pores refill, because the structure remains. Occasional use is fine for most skin, but building a routine around strips is building it around a cycle that cannot be won.

## Treating true blackheads

Blackheads respond to the standard comedone toolkit: salicylic acid for oil solubility, a retinoid at night to normalize how pores shed, and patience measured in six to eight weeks. Picking individual blackheads risks inflammation that converts a quiet clog into a red, memorable spot.

If blackheads are widespread and stubborn, a professional extraction session followed by a maintenance routine works better than escalating home pressure. The routine prevents new plugs; extraction only clears old ones.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can sebaceous filaments be removed permanently?

No. They are a normal part of pore anatomy and refill as oil flows. You can make them much less visible with oil cleansing and salicylic acid, but any removal is temporary by nature.

### Are pore strips bad for skin?

Occasional use is fine for most people, but frequent use irritates skin and can stress capillaries, and the result lasts only days. A leave on salicylic acid routine gives a steadier version of the same visual benefit.

### Why are the dots on my nose darker than elsewhere?

The nose has larger, more active pores, and the exposed tips of filaments oxidize in air and darken. Sun exposure darkens them further. It is a visibility issue more than a cleanliness issue.

### Does salicylic acid help both problems?

Yes. It is oil soluble, so it works inside the pore lining where both blackheads and filaments form. It loosens plugs and keeps filament tips clearer, which is why it is the first recommendation for both.
